Top 12 Tips for Effective Google AdWords Ad

In this article I show you my top twelve tips for creating effective Google AdWords ads.

I've been testing the Google pay per click advertising system for a while, with much success. These tips will help you create ads that generate higher click through rates, and lower cost per click.

1. Target The Right Audience

Target the right audience by selecting the language and countries that you want to target. For example, I exclude all countries where English is not understood by a large percentage of the population.

2. Refine Your Keywords

Use square brackets "[...]" around your keyword/s.

For example:

[google]
[google adwords]
Your ad will only show when the search is for the exact keyword phrase you have included within the brackets.

The ad will not show for searches that include other keywords. In our example, this would be for searches such as "google search," or "google news."

3. Test Multiple Ads Simultaneously

Always test 2 (or more) ads simultaneously. This is what is known in the print industry as an A/B split test.

Find out which one produces the higher click through ratio. Then replace the weaker performing ad with a new one.

Continue this process in your never-ending quest to get the highest click through ratio possible.

4. Track The Return-On-Investment Of Each Ad

Google tracks the click through ratio of each ad. But it doesn't track the conversion ratio.

Use a special tracking link in each ad to track its conversion ratio. For example, you could attach each ad with an affiliate tracking system link. Make sure each ad produces a return-on-investment.

5. Include Targeted Keywords In Your Ad

Include the targeted keywords in the headline and the description of the ad. Google will highlight searched keywords in bold in the ad.

When people scan search results, they look for the keywords they have entered. Searched keywords highlighted in bold certainly help to catch the user's attention. For this reason, ads with searched keywords usually perform better than ones without.

6. Sell The Benefits

Spell out one or more major benefit in your ad. For example, make more money, stay younger looking, lose weight, get healthier, live happier, etc.

7. Include Attention Grabbing Words In Your Ad

Start your headline with an attention grabbing word. For example, "Free:, New:, Sale:, etc." Make sure you stay within Google's editorial guidelines.

8. Use Words That Provoke Emotion & Enthusiasm

Use power words or call-to-action phrases that provoke emotion, enthusiasm and a response.

Here are some examples of power words:

free, cheap, sale, special offer, time limited offer, tricks, you, tips, enhance, discover, fact, learn, at last, free shipping, etc.
Here are some examples of call-to-action phrases:

* Buy Today - Save 50%
* Download Free Trial Now
* Sale Ends Tomorrow
Make sure the phrase specific to your business, otherwise Google may reject the phrase.

9. Sell Your USP (Unique Selling Proposition)

What makes your product or service better, or different, from the competition? Spell them out in your ad.

For example, one of Amazon.com's first taglines was "Earth's Biggest Bookstore." That's a powerful USP!

10. Link To Relevant Landing Pages

If an ad is for a specific product or service, create a landing page for the ad. Include relevant and useful information to convert the customer. Generally, a well designed landing page will almost always convert more visitors than if you simply sent the visitor to the home page.

11. Remove Common Words

Remove common words, such as "a, an, in, on, it, of, etc." Remove every word that does not absolutely need to be in the ad. Make every word count.

12. Deter Freebie Hunters

Deter freebie hunters by including the price of the product or service at the end of the ad. This will improve your overall conversion ratio and lower your average customer acquisition cost.

This may reduce your click through ratio, but that's OK. After all, you're not trying to target every body, only potential customers. In most cases, freebie hunters will never become paying customers.

Conclusion

Remember that advertising is a never-ending series of tests. Always track your ads. Never stop testing different keywords and ads to improve your conversion ratio and lower your customer acquisition cost.

Advertising in the Google AdWords advertising system works. It may not necessarily produce as many visitors as Overture, but the click through cost is usually lower.

I just read an article regarding SEO vs. Pay Per Click on an internet forum. The article summed up what it means to appear # 1 through #6 in Google's natural search perfectly. The quote was "Having the first spot or even the 5th or 6th in Google for your keywords is like having a huge billboard in the middle of Times Square." Think about that for a minute. Let that sink in. Got it? Good. Let's continue. The article goes on to say "That kind of traffic is intense and the exposure is priceless! We can say the same about a great ranking on a PPC campaign, but remember one thing - you will always have to pay for it. Free clicks in sponsored search? Never."

Let's examine the first statement. Imagine being a major retailer and one morning you wake up to hear that posting a billboard of your most prized product in Times Square is now free and that the duration of that ad campaign could be indefinite as long as you correctly setup your billboard. Do you think Steve Jobs would pass on a opportunity to put up a massive animated billboard of his new IPhone in Times Square for free? Oh yeah and he could keep it up for as long as 2 to 3 years. Your damn right he wouldn't. I bet you most CEO's of major corporations wouldn't either. That is exactly what a company can achieve when they do their due diligence in setting up their SEO strategy.

When done right a company that attains the top results on Google for their major products or services receives priceless exposure. Google's traffic is similar to the mass audience that strolls through Times Square except they are targeted. Now tell Steve Jobs that not only will he get his billboard up in Times Square for free and for roughly 2 to 3 years, but that the city of New-York will also be replacing the thousands of visitors who come through with visitors that are in the market for a smart phone. Currently on Google there are 146 million advertisers for the keyword for "smartphone." Imagine telling that 146 million they could have that billboard.

My previous 4 years in the interactive space has taught me that most internal marketing departments of companies do not have an SEO strategy. Although that's a rather small sample size of companies I would imagine that most major retailers do not have a plan for SEO. The year of 2007 appears to be the time when E-Retailers will be forced to recognize that PPC isn't the only search solution.

Having seen a client have this PPC experience, and simultaneously reading the succession of articles of companies pulling PPC, we realize this is happening to a lot of folks. The question is whether or not the CPC rates are worth the return. Google Sandbox and Aging Delay

The Sandbox is part of Google's ranking filters, the most important element of which appears to be time online and the age of your website. The age of your web site influences your rankings as well as the age of the web sites that link to your web site. Many have observed that the period appears to correlate with industry competitiveness/popularity, with the most popular and commercial industries having the longest "probation" period.

Steps to minimize Sandbox Effect:

While Google sandbox is not something you can control, there are certain steps you can take in order to make the sandbox effect less destructive for your new site. As with many aspects of SEO, there are ethical and unethical tips and tricks and unethical tricks can get you additional penalties or a complete ban from Google, so think twice before resorting to them. The unethical approaches will not be discussed in this article because they don comply with our policy.

Before we delve into more detail about particular techniques to minimize sandbox damage, it is necessary to clarify the general rule: you cannot fight the sandbox. The only thing you can do is to adapt to it and patiently wait for time to pass. Any attempts to fool Google starting from writing melodramatic letters to Google, to using “sandbox tools” to bypass the filter – can only make your situation worse. Buy old or recently expired domains:

If you have a new website, there is a good chance that you will be placed in the sandbox. To mininize the sandbox effect buy old domains or the domains which are recently Expired.

Create valuable content and quality links:

Along with the passage of time, nothing can help you reach the tops of the major search engines better than quality website content and good links from reputable sources. Make sure your website copy is original and informative, and that each page of your site contains different content. In addition, a slow and steady buildup of good links will bring you the best results. Links from .edu, .gov, and .mil domains might be beneficial, as those domains are usually exempt from the sandbox filter.

Concentrate on less popular keywords:

You might avoid being sent to the sandbox by peppering your website with keywords that are less popular in your industry or category. Since the popular keywords are the ones most people strive for, the wait for rankings with these words is generally much longer than it would be if you focused on the less popular keywords. You can simultaneously get your site listed for less popular keywords while waiting to get to the top for the most profitable keywords.

Host your website on a well established host:

Host your new site on a subdomain of a well-established host . The sandbox effect is not so severe for new subdomains . You can also host the main site on a subdomain and on a separate domain host just some contents, linked with the main site. You can also use redirects from the subdomained site to the new one, although the effect of this practice is also questionable because it can also be viewed as an attempt to fool Google.

Conclusion:

Google has been going to great lengths to cut out on search engine spam. Some have faulted them on the lengths that they are going to claiming that it is effecting legitimate sites as well as the spam websites. While this is probably the case, as an owner of a website you need to place yourself in the position of Google and ask yourself what they are really looking for in a website. Google is looking for websites that offer quality content. Google still relies on the natural voting system that was first used to establish pagerank. They may change the way that they qualify content or inbound links, but the basic elements of a quality website will always remain the same.

I was recently posed an SEO question from a reader specific to ecommerce stores. The question was that since search engine ranking is so heavily contingent on a website's content being relevantly optimized, how do online stores get high search engine rankings? Being that one of my first websites was an ecommerce store with general merchandise, and I spent several months myself stuck on this dilemma, I knew exactly why they were asking. Ecommerce sites such as that use the keywords for "shopping", etc, but the majority of their pages contain item descriptions that aren't relevant to the term "shopping". Selling items from handbags to vacuum cleaners makes it hard to keep your content consistent and relevant to your search engine keywords, and it doesn't help your ranking for a search engine to find irrelevant keywords between your website pages without a common theme. It's a unique challenge for stores and shopping malls that don't sell all the same types of items and contain an inconsistent keyword theme throughout their pages.

Through my work I found that eCommerce stores can overcome these obstacles by taking these 10 steps:

1. Use the same two to three keywords between all of your pages whether it's a highly used keyword on that page or not, like "shopping", "discount", "on sale"...whatever your common store theme is, regardless of the item (we'll use these three as examples for the purpose of this discussion, but you might feel that different keywords better describe your store as a whole). Optimize your main page content very heavily on these keywords with a description of your business and explanation of your website's mission and theme. It will serve the purpose of driving search engine traffic to your front page, which should be very relevant to your front page keyword tags, as well as convincing shoppers that they want to shop there. The beginning of this text will also show up in your website's description in some searches and could effect how many people click through to your site from your listing. Weave your keywords throughout the page, but more heavily in the top of the first paragraph.

2. Categorize your store's selections. Separate each item into a category such as "handbags", "luggage", "jewelry", etc. rather than lumping them all together disorganized. Create as many separate categories as possible. If you only sell jewelry in your store (in which case "jewelry" is one of your primary website keywords), separate the items into categories such as "necklaces", "earrings", "bracelets", etc. for example. Use these category names as the second group of keywords on your main page, right behind your primary keywords. Make sure there's a navigation bar on your front page that links directly to each category by name, matching these keywords exactly in bold text links.

3. Tag your category pages with your primary home page keywords: "shopping", "discount", "on sale", and then add the category name as your next keyword ("Jewelry" for example), followed by a few descriptive words for the items in that category, such as "bracelet", "necklace", "gold", "diamond". This methodized string of keywords provides connection and relevancy from your main page, through your category page, to your item pages, which might not have appeared relevant otherwise.

4. Add page descriptions on each of your category pages and include all of your page tags in your page content. For instance include a very brief summary of your front page website description (without copying text directly). This will allow visitors who landed directly on your category page to still get an understanding of your business and enables you to use your primary website's keywords ("shopping", "discount", "on sale") so that, primarily, it shows search engines direct relevance between your top page and each second level page. Then provide a description of the category itself and the items within the category, utilizing the rest of your page's tags. This text will persuade visitors to shop on your site, in this category particularly, while convincing search engines your page content is relevant to your keywords and this second level page is directly relevant to third level pages as well as your top level page.

5. Tag your item pages with your primary website keywords ("shopping", "discount", and "on sale"), then your relevant category keyword ("Jewelry"), followed by additional descriptive keywords specific to that item, as if it's a directory map.

Include all of your keywords for each page in your content where it's tagged, whenever it makes sense. So you have the "shopping" keyword tagged on all of your pages to make your whole store relevant to that very important keyword, now you need your item pages themselves (third level pages) to be relevant to the first level and second level pages.

For instance, a page that describes a gold bracelet as explained in the simple rules above, might be categorized in "Jewelry" and tagged as "shopping", "discount", "on sale", "jewelry", "bracelet", "gold", "bangle", and so on. Your description for that item might start with, "If you're shopping for an exquisite addition to your jewelry collection, this gorgeous gold bangle bracelet is on sale at an incredible discount..." You get the idea... Make each page's description meaningful, interesting, persuasive, and rich with keywords.

6. Add as many (optimized!) pages as possible. Stores with the biggest catalogs, the most categories, and the most item pages have more of a presence on the internet, of course. As long as each category is accessible from the main page and each item is accessible from a top level category (your whole website only goes three links deep: main page, category page, item page), no links are broken, there's a navigation bar on each page, and all the pages are optimized as described above, the more the better. The highest ranked online stores have thousands of well optimized product listings, however my first ecommerce store reached a very decent ranking with 300 item listings.

7. Use "Alt Tags" for your images. This is text that will show to human visitors only if your image is unavailable, it makes your images searchable on the internet, and it is always seen by search engines as content. Use your keywords heavily in image alt tags to increase your page's keyword usage, making your page content even more relevant to search engines without boring your shoppers. On a page where one of your keywords lacks very much presence and it would take away from the quality of your content to squeeze it into the text anymore, include that word again in an image "alt tag" instead.

8. Use relevant cross-reference links between pages within your site. If you have the capability to provide cross-references from one item to other relevant items in your catalog, do that! Search engines love cross references. You've already shown the search engine through use of keywords and page descriptions that your third level pages are relevant to your first and second level pages, and cross references between item pages show additional relevancy between third level pages as well. "FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT, DECEPTIVE AND UNFAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES"

1. On or about May 15, 2009, after December 14, 2008 time for filing certification and claim form had expired, the plaintiff , Joseph W. Higgins, had applied for a Paypal account and a Ebay account for the purpose of selling products on Ebay auction site. The plaintiff open the account under a email address. Contract agreement was accepted. The plaintiff is a affiliate member of linkshare.com, and promotes products for ShopNBC and Tigerdirect. .

2. Both Paypal and Ebay, required that the plaintiff provide his social security number as a requirement to participate on there auction site program. Status verified.

3. Once this was provided, only then was plaintiff allowed to list products on Ebay auction site. The plaintiff's social security number was being used to identify the plaintiff's account and transfer money from the buyer's account to Ebay and Paypal's account upon purchase of products listed.

4. Under this email address, , the plaintiff had numerous amounts of bidders, about 40 who bidded on the plaintiff's products but never met the reserve except for one. On mostly all these bids, the starting prices were starting at 0.99 cents. But the reserve prices were 5 hundred, 8 hundred, one thousand and more. .

5. The plaintiff needed the mark up on the auction block to meet the fees required of Ebay and Paypal once the products are sold. But on the website no mark ups were being used.

6. When the time for auction of the plaintiff's listing expired, Ebay site offered a buy it now button, that should of allowed the customers to see the reserve price and meet it. But what this button did was offer all the plaintiff's products to be brought at the starting prices.

7. So now the plaintiff had 40 or more people, rushing to purchase the plaintiff's thousand dollar items, his 8 hundred dollar items and his 5 hundred dollar items for 099 cent.

8. Only one person was honest enough to purchase the plaintiffs's product at the correct reserve price. This is the person who left a positive feedback on plaintiff's Ebay account.

9. The plaintiff filed with Ebay, a complaint addressing this button. Both Ebay and Paypal address the issue by closing the plaintiff's account, and providing the plaintiff with a debt of $700.00. Every single customer was refunded there money back that tried to purchase the product below the reserve price. The plaintiff only received proceeds from one customer on a item that was $258.00. The plaintiff was only with that account for two weeks. Clearly, the plaintiff did not owe Ebay, $700.00. Both Ebay and Paypal attempted to debt the plaintiff's bank account for the funds without consent.

10. Both Ebay and Paypal, useing my email address and social security number, placed this debt in the plaintiff's Paypal account, blocking the plaintiff from useing this account on any other transaction outside Ebay. Paypal, is a company who places themselves as the only money transfer system on mostly all website where people seek to make a living.

11. Months later, the plaintiff applys with paypal again under a new email address.

12. At this time, the plaintiff was given a choice, as to provide either a social security number or a bank account information inorder to be verified. The plaintiff choose to provide a bank account information, not social security number.

13. At this same time, the plaintiff applied with Ebay again also, and they provided a choice whether to use paypal or direct deposit. The plaintiff choose to use direct deposit not paypal to transact business with the customers.

14. Under the screen name joestore2 on Ebay account, On October 12, 2009, the plaintiff had 319 bids from 319 customers all across the United States, after entering into a contract once again with Ebay. This contract agreement entrusted the plaintiff to sell his products on Ebay. And in every description, the plaintiff offered lower price then the reserve bid for that same item if the customers are willing to purchase said items on joehigginsstore

On October 12, 2009, some of the customers have either met the reserve price or was expected to meet the reserve prices when Ebay and Paypal both closed down both accounts, demanding the plaintiff provide his social security number. Both Ebay and Paypal blocked transaction from further being made. Then charged this plaintiff's bank account $199.99. According to there sellers policy, a relist of products never sold, is not required to owe fees if the seller relist the products. This plaintiff was not allow to continue in there program at all. A complaint was made with both companies again. They both avoided the complaint and continued to demand a social security number. In Steele, both Ebay, paypal and the plaintiffs agreed in a million dollar settlement that credit card information was sufficent to transact business with them. But there deception continues.

In Steele et al. V. Paypal, Inc and Ebay, Inc, Civil Action No: 1:05-CV-01720, the defendents are settleing for 3. 5 million dollars for deceptive behavior on the buyers point of view.
In March 2005, the Plaintiffs filed this lawsuit in New York state court on behalf of themselves and the Class. The lawsuit alleges claims against PayPal and eBay arising out of representations contained in certain provisions of the PayPal User Agreement regarding PayPal's policies and practices for responding to refund requests (or "Buyer Complaints") from those customers who pay for transactions through PayPal using funds from sources other than a credit card. In particular, the lawsuit alleges that PayPal's policies and practices constitute deceptive trade practices, fraudulent inducement and misrepresentations, and breach of the PayPal User Agreement. The lawsuit also alleges claims against Essex, a company that sold goods through eBay, arising out of alleged misrepresentations about Essex's goods and services.

On July 24, 2008, Judge Glasser entered an order granting preliminary approval of the Settlement and certifying the following "Class" for purposes of the Settlement: all U.S. based PayPal account holders who funded a PayPal transaction after February 1, 2004, using a source other than a credit card: (i) who subsequently requested a reversal of the transaction through PayPal's prevailing Buyer Complaint Policy and/or Buyer Protection Policy (collectively, "Policies"); (ii) who did not receive a refund equal to 100% of their transaction payment in response to such request from PayPal or their bank; and (iii) who, through the timely submission of a Claim Form under oath, attest to a reasonable and good faith belief that they would have received a full reversal of such payment had they used a valid credit card in their possession at the time of the subject transaction to fund the payment and filed a timely chargeback request with their credit card issuing bank.

On April 30, 2009, Judge Glasser entered an order granting final approval and modified the class definition. The class as modified includes: All U.S. based PayPal account holders who funded a PayPal transaction after February 1, 2004, using a source other than a credit card: (i) who subsequently requested a reversal of the transaction through PayPal's prevailing Buyer Complaint Policy and/or Buyer Protection Policy (collectively, "Policies"); and (ii) who did not receive a refund equal to 100% of their transaction payment in response to such request from PayPal or their bank.

The current incarnation of PayPal is the result of a March 2000 merger between Confinity and X.com.[4] Confinity was founded in December 1998 by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek, and Ken Howery, initially as a Palm Pilot payments and cryptography company.[5] X.com was founded by Elon Musk in March 1999, initially as an Internet financial services company. Both Confinity and X.com launched their websites in late 1999. Both companies were located on University Avenue in Palo Alto. Confinity's website was initially focused on reconciling beamed payments from Palm Pilots[6] with email payments as a feature and X.com's website initially featured financial services with email payments as a feature.

At Confinity, many of the initial recruits were alumni of The Stanford Review, also founded by Peter Thiel, and most early engineers hailed from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, recruited by Max Levchin. On the X.com side, Elon Musk recruited a wide range of technical and business personnel, including many that were critical to the combined company's success, such as Amy Klement, Sal Giambanco, Roelof Botha[7] of Sequoia Capital, Sanjay Bhargava and Jeremy Stoppelman.[8]

To block potentially fraudulent access by automated systems, PayPal used a system (see CAPTCHA) of making the user enter numbers from a blurry picture, which they coined the Gausebeck-Levchin test.[9]

eBay watched the rise in volume of its online payments and realized the fit of an online payment system with online auctions. eBay purchased Billpoint in May 1999, prior to the existence of PayPal. eBay made Billpoint its official payment system, dubbing it "eBay Payments," but cut the functionality of Billpoint by narrowing it to only payments made for eBay auctions. For this reason, PayPal was listed in many more auctions than Billpoint. In February 2000, the PayPal service had an average of approximately 200,000 daily auctions while Billpoint (in beta) had only 4,000 auctions.[10][9][11][12] By April 2000, more than 1,000,000 auctions promoted the PayPal service. [13] PayPal was able to turn the corner and become the first dot-com to IPO after the September 11 attacks.[14]

Acquisition by eBay
n October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion.[15] PayPal had previously been the payment method of choice by more than fifty percent of eBay users, and the service competed with eBay's subsidiary Billpoint, Citibank's c2it, whose service was closed in late 2003, and Yahoo!'s PayDirect, whose service was closed in late 2004. Western Union announced the December 2005 shut down of their BidPay service but subsequently sold it in 2006 to CyberSource Corporation. BidPay subsequently ceased operations on December 31, 2007. Some competitors which offer some of PayPal's services, such as Google Checkout,Wirecard, Moneybookers, 2Checkout, CCNow and Kagi, remain in business, despite the fact that eBay now requires everyone on its Australian and United Kingdom sites to offer PayPal.[16][17] Eventually eBay moderated its position, and mandated that sellers on eBay Australia offer PayPal as one of the (but not necessarily the only) payment methods.[18] These accepted payment methods include bank deposit, cheques and money orders, escrow, and credit cards (processed by other than PayPal).[19]

In January 2008, PayPal agreed to acquire Fraud Sciences, a privately-held Israeli start-up company with expertise in online risk tools, for $169 million, in order to enhance eBay and PayPal's proprietary fraud management systems and accelerate the development of improved fraud detection tools.[20] In November 2008, the company acquired Bill Me Later, an online payments company offering transactional credit at over 1000 online merchants in the US.[21]

PayPal's total payment volume, the total value of transactions, was US$ 60 billion in 2008, an increase of 27 percent over the previous year.[22] The company continues to focus on international growth and growth of its Merchant Services division, providing e-payments for retailers off eBay.

Business today
Currently, PayPal operates in 190 markets, and it manages over 184 million accounts, more than 73 million of them active. PayPal allows customers to send, receive, and hold funds in 19 currencies worldwide[22]. These currencies are the Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Chinese renminbi yuan (only available for some Chinese accounts, see below), Euro, pound sterling, Japanese yen, Czech koruna, Danish krone, Hong Kong dollar, Hungarian forint, Israeli new sheqel, Mexican peso, New Zealand dollar, Norwegian krone, Polish zloty, Singapore dollar, Swedish krona, Swiss franc and U.S. dollar. PayPal operates locally in 13 countries.

Residents in 194 markets can use PayPal in their local markets to send money online. These new markets include Peru, Indonesia, the Philippines, Croatia, Fiji, Vietnam and Jordan. A complete list can be viewed at PayPal's website.

PayPal revenues for Q1 2009 were $643 million, up 11 percent year over year. 42 percent of revenues in q1 2009 were from international markets. PayPal's Total Payment Volume (TPV), the total value of transactions in Q1 2009 was nearly $16 billion, up 10 percent year over year.[23]

In 2008, PayPal's TPV off eBay exceeded volume on eBay for the first time. PayPal's Total Payment Volume in 2008 was $60 billion representing nearly 9 percent of global e-commerce and 15 percent of US e-commerce[24]

At an analyst day on March 11, 2009, eBay CEO, John Donahoe announced that PayPal could be a larger driver of revenue than the eBay marketplaces business.[25] RIM announced that PayPal will be the only payment mechanism for its Blackberry App World, which launched on April 1, 2009.[26]

In China PayPal offers two kinds of accounts:

* PayPal.com accounts, for sending and receiving money to/from other PayPal.com accounts. All non-Chinese accounts are PayPal.com accounts, so these accounts may be used to send money internationally.
* PayPal.cn accounts, for sending and receiving money to and from other PayPal.cn accounts.

It is impossible to send money between PayPal.cn accounts and PayPal.com accounts, so PayPal.cn accounts are effectively unable to make international payments. For PayPal.cn, the only supported currency is the renminbi.

Although PayPal's corporate headquarters are located in San Jose, PayPal's operations center is located near Omaha, Nebraska, where the company employs more than 2,000 people as of 2007.[27]. PayPal's European headquarters are in Luxembourg and international headquarters in Singapore. The company also recently opened a technology center in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Chennai India.

PayPalLabs
PayPal's innovation environment, Paypal-Labs.com[28], hosts several outreach and experimental projects such as the storefront application[29], the Myspace and Facebook donation widgets, and the PayPal blog.[30]

Bank status
In the United States, PayPal is licensed as a money transmitter on a state-by-state basis.[31] PayPal is not classified as a bank in the United States, though the company is subject to some of the rules and regulations governing the financial industry including Regulation E consumer protections and the USA PATRIOT Act.[32] On May 15, 2007, PayPal announced that it would move its European operations from the UK to Luxembourg, commencing July 2, 2007 as PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. & Cie, S.C.A.[33] This would be as a Luxembourg entity regulated as a bank by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), the Luxembourg equivalent of the FSA.[34] PayPal Luxembourg will then provide the PayPal service throughout the European Union (EU).

Safety and protection policies
The PayPal Buyer Protection Policy states that customers may file a buyer complaint within 45 days if they did not receive an item or if the item they purchased was significantly not as described. If the buyer used a credit card, they might get a refund via chargeback from their credit card company.

According to PayPal, it protects sellers in a limited fashion via the Seller Protection Policy.[35] In general the Seller Protection Policy is intended to protect the seller from certain kinds of chargebacks or complaints if seller meets certain conditions including proof of delivery to the buyer. PayPal states the Seller Protection Policy is "designed to protect sellers against claims by buyers of unauthorized payments and against claims of non-receipt of any merchandise". Note that this contrasts with the consumer protection they offer. This policy should be read carefully before assuming protection. In particular the Seller Protection Policy includes a list of "Exclusions" which itself includes "Intangible goods", "Claims for receipt of goods 'not as described'" and "Total reversals over the annual limit". There are also other restrictions in terms of the sale itself, the payment method and the destination country the item is shipped to (simply having a tracking mechanism is not sufficient to guarantee the Seller Protection Policy is in effect).[36] A class-action lawsuit was filed against PayPal, days after the company's successful initial public offering. [37]

Security
Security key
In early 2006, PayPal introduced an optional security key as an additional precaution against fraud. A user account tied to a security key has a modified login process: the account holder enters their login ID and password, as normal, but is then prompted to press the button on the security key and enter the six-digit number generated by it. This two-factor authentication is intended to prevent an account from being compromised by a malicious third party without access to the physical security key. However, the user (or malicious third party) can alternatively authenticate by providing the credit card or bank account number listed on their account. Thus, the PayPal's implementation does not offer the security of true two-factor authentication.

The key currently costs US$5.00 for all users with no ongoing fees.[38] The option of using a security key with one's account is currently available only to users registered in Australia, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.[39]

It is also possible to use a mobile phone to receive an MTAN (Mobile Transaction Authentication Number) via SMS[40] , however this security scheme has known vulnerabilities.[41]

In Europe, PayPal is registered as a bank in Luxembourg under the legal name PayPal (Europe) Sarl et Cie SCA, a company regulated centrally by the Luxembourg bank authority, the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF)[42] (note that all of the company's European accounts were transferred to the PayPal's bank in Luxembourg on July 2, 2007.[43]) Prior to this move, PayPal had been registered in the UK as Paypal (Europe) Ltd, an entity which was licensed as an Electronic Money Issuer with the UK's Financial Services Authority (FSA) from 2004. This ceased in 2007, when the company moved to Luxembourg,[44][45] however the Luxembourg entity is still regulated by the FSA, as it is an entity from the European Economic Area which conducts regulated activities in the UK.[46]

In the US, although PayPal has an extensive User Agreement, [47] PayPal is not directly regulated by the U.S. federal government, because it serves as a payment intermediary.[48] The law is unclear as to whether PayPal is a bank, narrow bank, money services business or money transmitter. PayPal could also be subject to state regulation, but state laws vary, as do their definitions of banks, narrow banks, money services businesses and money transmitters. The most analogous regulatory source of law for PayPal transactions comes from P2P payments using credit and debit cards. Ordinarily, a credit card transaction, specifically the relationship between the issuing bank and the cardholder, is governed by the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) 15 U.S.C. §§ 1601-1667f as implemented by Regulation Z, 12 C.F.R. pt. 226, (TILA/Z). TILA/Z requires specific procedures for billing errors, dispute resolution and limits cardholder liability for unauthorized charges. [49] Similarly, the legal relationship between a debit cardholder and the issuing bank is regulated by the Electronic Funds Transfer Act (EFTA) 15 U.S.C. §§ 1693-1693r, as implemented by Regulation E, 12 C.F.R. pr. 205, (EFTA/E). EFTA/E is directed at consumer protection and provides strict error resolution procedures. [50] However, because PayPal is a payment intermediary and not otherwise regulated directly, TILA/Z and EFTA/E do not operate exactly as written once the credit/debit card transaction occurs via PayPal. Basically, unless a PayPal transaction is funded with a credit card, the consumer has no recourse in the event of fraud by the seller.[citation needed]

Money transfers via PayPal create an inherent risk of fraud due to the impersonal nature of internet commerce and the gap in regulatory treatment of PayPal transactions. The existing fraud protection regulations, EFTA/E and TILA/Z, do not apply to P2P account holders as they do debit/credit card transactions outside of a P2P payment service.

If an unauthorized third party obtains and uses someone's PayPal login information and completes a transaction using the accountholder's debit or credit card, EFTA/E and TILA/Z make PayPal responsible for the breach. There are, of course, fact specific exceptions to this rule. One is if funds are illicitly withdrawn from a PayPal deposit account. In that situation, neither PayPal nor the bank is required to return the funds, because the agreement between a consumer and PayPal makes those types of transactions authorized. [51]

PayPal account holders' private information is marginally protected under one federal law. Since PayPal is a financial institution under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB), it cannot disclose its account holders' non-public personal information to third parties unless account holders opt in to those disclosures. [52]

If an account is subject to fraud or unauthorized use, PayPal puts the "Limited Access" designation on the account. At this point, the account holder must:

* Reset their password
* Develop a set of security questions (based on the hypothetical and not fact — e.g. "What is your favorite ice cream?" not "What is your mother's maiden name?")
* Verify location by landline phone or by mail

PayPal has developed substantial anti-Phishing resources,[53] for identifying and reporting phishing. PayPal encourages consumers to report all phishing emails to them, to better equip them in fighting this phenomenon.

There is always a big discussion when it comes to comparing two of the best ways to advertise online: PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising and article marketing, otherwise known as "organic" or "natural" search engine optimization. There is no denying that both methods can be effective. However, which method is better? Which gives you a bigger bang for your buck?

You may get varying statistics on this issue, depending on which website you visit for information. Oh yes, this matters, because you have to consider the source of the statistics and who is sponsoring the article. For example, two sources of information (respectively, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and ComScore) recently produced studies indicating that PPC advertising was more cost-effective on average. However, did the fact that Yahoo/Overture and Google were sponsoring this major study play any role in determining the final outcome? Of course it did - those are the two biggest PPC companies on the net!

In figuring out which of the two is better, you have to consider cost-effectiveness as well as click-through-rates and direct conversion from visiting user to paying customer. We are going to review some statistics a little bit later on. For now, let's consider some logical points that illustrate how PPC and article marketing differ.

Search engine result pages display more listings than PPC results, which does have a psychological effect on the user. For some users seeing ten search results (each one relevant to the search) is enough to convince them that there is enough web information on the subject and that "fishing" PPC ads might not be necessary.

The catch is that in order to actually rank in the Top 10 SEO results for your keyword, you have to have relevant website content, not to mention technical prowess in HTML coding. Search engines will be focusing on their proprietary algorithms, or the most relevant websites based on the search term queried. There is no "bribery" here, whereas in PPC, it is quite the opposite: whoever bids highest for each word usually gets the top listing. A quality algorithm definitely plays a part in PPC, but in the end money talks. In article marketing, we haven't quite come to the point where "money talks". The best websites still win the search engine contest and that is an important factor to consider in your marketing campaign.

Even PPC proponents will admit that PPC is largely style over substance. With PPC advertising you are trying to grab attention in just a few loud and occasionally obnoxious words. You direct the user to a carefully crafted page that "sells" the idea. This operation contrasts with article marketing, which doesn't necessarily sell an idea on a single page, nor does it grab attention with a few words. With article marketing, there is an entire article waiting for the visitor, which uses a methodical and "indirect" approach. Assuming you are listed in the Top #10, your listing means that the search engine agrees that your website is the best authority on the keyword subject - for the time being. People in a hurry or on a whim will probably click on PPC. People on a mission will be looking for relevant content on their chosen keyword.

Therefore, the question now becomes which methodology works better for your business? Are you appealing to the fast clicker or the thoughtful user? Let's now consider two sources of statistics for a clearer view of the issue. First, one in favor of article marketing, the next in favor of PPC.

In Favor of Article Marketing

Jakob Nielsen, Ph.D. and principal founder of the Nielsen Norman Group researched the behavior of users who found search engine results pages and noticed some trends. Forty-two percent of users selected the #1 search listing for their result, leaving 58% that selected another Top 10 Result. The #1 site listed held the majority of clicks. This indicates that almost two thirds of Internet users were not content to choose even the #1 listing on a natural SEO search. That means that these users (and the majority of all users) are actually using independent judgment in deciding what links are most relevant to their needs.

Other related statistics (with sources from ComScore, Webxico, iProspect, SEOResearcher and Hotchkiss, Garrison, and Jensen) concluded that 77% of search users choose organic listings over PPC ads. There were also studies that suggested organic click-through generated 25% higher conversion rates than equivalent PPC click-through.

In Favor of PPC Advertising

Now to be fair, we have to consider some advantages that PPC advertising has. The best feature PPC has is that it gets instantaneous results. SEO advertising takes time, especially if you have a new website just submítted to the all of the major search engines. Yes, this can be frustrating. PPC brings you immediate traffic and sometimes brings in thousands of users. Seeing your Alexa ranking take a drastic jump certainly pumps up your adrenaline!

ComScore recently published statistics in favor of PPC, stating that their studied users had an 18.3% click-through-rate on "paid" search results versus a 4.3% click-through rate for organic search results. The conversion rate was also higher according to ComScore, stating that PPC had a 1.4% versus SEO's 0.6%.

The Real Issue: Longevity

However, the downside here (even if you didn't contest these suspicious results) is that instant and high volume traffic is, frankly, cheap and not as exciting as it first appears to be. Remember that when you use PPC ads you are making a pitch and capitalizing on your audience's curiosity. When that curiosity fades, they forget your website - especially if it's just a glorified advertisement. PPC campaigns can also be costly and time consuming when you consider your duties as a manager.

Another problematic scenario with PPC is that they have no staying power - unless of course you have thousands of dollars a month to blow in this recession. With article marketing you get more quality traffic, and perhaps more importantly to you, you earn customer trust over time. Internet users aren't stupid, the popularity of Yahoo Answers notwithstanding. Most users know that PPC ads usually aren't relevant to their search - they're just there because someone is consistently paying to get noticed.

You can consider article marketing as an investment that continually pays all through the life of your company (or until you shut the website down) since it generates traffic forever. You can easily spend thousands a month on a brilliant PPC campaign and soon run out of money, meaning your ads go extinct. Therefore, we can conclude that article marketing does have specific advantages over PPC, which are intrinsic because of the differences in operation.

How About Return-On-Investment?

ROI is another key issue, as short-term and long-term profit must equal out. Article marketing, by some authorities appears to have a slower ROI -(especially if you make revenue on CTRs). However, studies suggest that organic ROI is more consistent than PPC. Consider some independent research conducted by popular blogger Gord Hotchkiss who explained the situation in crystal clear terms. Let's say you have 50 high traffic search terms. Now for these 50 terms, there are 2.8 million searches being launched in a month. If statistics like ComScore's are correct and unbiased, that translates to 456,000 visitors thanks to PPC and 153,000 visitors thanks to article marketing.

The total cost of those 456,000 PPC visitors would amount to over $500,000 with an average CPC of $1.18. Even if you work with an SEO company that charges top dollar ($10,000 a month, let's say) you're still paying $10,000 compared to half a million. That means article marketing's virtual CPC amounts to $0.07. Even if you apply PPC's higher conversion rate, 3,647 converted visitors, you are paying $147.08 for each individual person. Compare that to 611 visitors you earned through article marketing - you are paying $16.37 for each visitor. And in doing so, you are also earning a higher quality of customer and generating traffic until the end of days.

Does your final ROI number take into account your total expenses? Absolutely! While both methods of advertising have their place online, when it comes to earning quality traffic, article marketing gets the last word.

So get really CLEAR about why you have your own home business. Ask yourself, what goals and vision do you have for your life? What will make it all worthwhile? Get excited and get started.

Success in home-based business is anything but easy. The first year is especially challenging. So what will keep you going? You have to have never-ending determination to succeed and willingness to go out there again and again.

Looking back I can identify so many rough times in my business and I could give you so many good reasons I should have quit along the way. Plus, I could have told you about all these challenges and WHY I was going to quit, and you probably would have supported me in quitting! After all, if it had happened to you, you would have quit, too.

But here I am. I didnt quit. Im not quitting. It is not in my nature and it is not acceptable. Failure is not an option. I get knocked down I get up. The only way to fail is to quit and I just wont do that.
3. Organization (how to get things done)

Real effectiveness comes from implementing structures -- calendar/schedules, systems, processes -- to ensure efficiency and success. I cant tell you how many times I reinvented the wheel when I was starting my own business whether it was letters I sent out or processes I was repeating but didnt have systematized.

Part of the problem was a lack of organization. The business grew quickly and I was a few steps behind trying to keep up. I also floundered with contact management for YEARS. First I used an Excel spreadsheet (yikes!) then moved Microsoft Access where I had several databases but only knew how to enter data (didnt know how to analyze it or use it effectively for mailings).

Thankfully I now use CardScan for data and contact management so my marketing and cold calling efforts are streamlined and simplified.

My scheduling system is now organized as well. I use a time mapping system a la Julie Morgenstern , and my husband and I share a wall calendar for family scheduling. (Were moving to the Google calendar which will probably make things even more efficient.)

Ultimately, organization of your daily processes will alleviate distractions and breakdowns and allow you to focus on making money.

4. Accountability (taking things on and being responsible for results)

Im fortunate that early on in my business I recognized that if business was slow it was purely because of my own efforts. What I put into it I got out of it and it remains so today.

I dont engage in talk about economic recession. I dont blame other people and circumstances for how things are going. Its all ME.

Which is not to beat myself up when things arent going as well. Its simply an understanding I have of myself and my business. I am the catalyst for everything. If I pull back, my business pulls back. Works like that every time.

So be responsible for the way things are going. Dont be intimidated by the competition. Know who you are and what you have to offer. Make a difference with your customers. Be a leader and play big.

5. Adventurous-ness (risk-taking, make it work somehow mentality)
Success in home-based business aint for sissies! Sometimes its tough, excruciating even, but true entrepreneurs put themselves out on a limb over and over again. Its the inherent nature of entrepreneurship -- standing in the discomfort of new realms of possibility.

Every time I have stepped into the unknown I have had to tell myself that somehow it will work. It always does. I just have to show up and keep going. After reading this report I figured out what it is all about and found several discrepancies in the authors reasoning. The report claims that the author�s own AdSense income has been falling sharply in recent months. However, if you read the report closely you will notice several flaws in the author�s thinking.

The first major flaw is that the author was building AdSense sites with auto generation software. Well, there�s the reason for his decline in AdSense earnings! Anyone who builds AdSense sites knows that Google is on a mission to rid the internet of spam and junk sites that add no value to the internet. They are de indexing auto generation sites at a feverish pave. Auto generated sites simply do not work anymore (when was the last time you heard of someone using Traffic Equalizer?).

Many people have brought this point up and the author�s response was that the quality of your site only affects the traffic you receive and not the amount of money you receive per click from AdSense. This is a valid statement; however, it is only a half truth. Junk sites won�t affect you click value but they will affect your click through rate. When a visitor lands on an auto generated site the first thing they do is hit the �back button� on their web browser. Therefore, junk sites are losing traffic and have low click through rates, a recipe for disaster when it comes to making money with Google AdSense and a quick way to have your AdSense earnings tumble!

Let�s say you receive 5000 visitors a month and you are earning $1.00 per click from AdSense. If you build quality sites and your click through rate is 10% you will receive 500 clicks and earn around $500. The US Navy blogs. Larry Kudlow of CNBC blogs. I'd say "everybody and their brother" except (1) it's a cliche and (2) it may be grammatically inaccurate. Dan Rather is only too aware that everybody blogs.

But just as blogging and the blogosphere have become widely accepted, blammo--along comes podcasting.

Just what is podcasting? Literally, it's broadcasts meant to be played as MP3 files on an iPod or other MP3 player.

Visit the podcasters discussion group on Yahoo! Groups and a dizzying variety of terms confuse: FeedBurner, Skype, GarageBand, iPodder, and the like. Since I'm not yet a podder myself it's not my intent to weigh the relative merits of the technologies or to discuss how they work together. I'm just here to offer some thoughts on blogging vs. podcasting.

Actually, podcasting seems to have grown out of blogging, and quite often, podders are bloggers who include podcasts in their blogs. Plus, as Amy proves, podcasting and blogging can work hand in hand as means of delivering content. There are significant differences between the two as well as similarities. Let's look at a few.

Unlike blogging, which only involves discussions of RSS, feeds, syndication, and various blog platforms such as Blogger.com, podcasting marries technology, broadcasting and blogging. The technology may be easy to use, but it takes more time than to simply run a Web site or use Blogger.

Also, while bloggers may run into copyright issues, podders may want to use a particular piece of music only to have RIAA and the lawyers come after them. There are also home distractions in a podder's life that some podders decide to make part of the program, such as children walking in and out. What is important is whether the content is relevant to listener's lives. In this way it's similar to reviewing blogs. For example, I would find no relevance or value in a blog about hating a particular political party (and there are plenty) or religion (also sadly a plethora out there), or for example one about throwing javelins in the Olympics.

A recent review question on the podcast-review group about a podcast exercise show asked questions of relevance to people who do aerobics or a regular workout. This makes perfect sense, like Amazon.com reviews or Epinions.com or Bizrate.com. It's consumer review and also peer review for podcasts. In our media-driven age, review of everything is vital.

Blogs also get peer reviewed by the Weblog Review , the Web log Awards (http://2004weblogawards.com/), and other Netizen sites who police the blogosphere. Peer reviews. Bloggers and podders have a responsibility to review and stand by their products. It's a pity the traditional mediaopoly of CNN and Ted Turner and the publishing conglomerates don't have that same accountability. In many respects we're back to the vernacular printing press and Gutenberg days when moveable type upset the elite publishing monopoly that was held by the only educated populations--namely, priests, monks, nuns and anyone affiliated with the Church. Suddenly, Bibles and Chaucer were printed not in Latin but in Irish/Gaelic and the native tongues of European countries. The leader of that movement was Dante, who wrote his Divine Comedy in Italian, not Latin. Similarly, podders broadcast not in the elite commercial-driven network-paradigm but in the voice of talk radio. Although there have been discussions on turning podcasting into a business. It was bound to happen--after all, bloggers employ Google AdSense to support their addiction to the written word. But podcasting started out as a way to challenge the traditional media.
